DOGGED INNOVATION

Born in Annonay, France, on April 20th, 1786, Marc Seguin was a self-taught polymath and inventor whose breakthroughs transformed bridges and railways alike. In 1825, together with his brothers, Seguin completed the first major suspension bridge in continental Europe over the Rhône River at Tournon—using innovative parallel iron-wire cables in place of traditional chains. The greater strength and flexibility of these cables allowed longer spans, laying technological foundations for many of the world’s most iconic suspension bridges that followed.

Seguin’s innovations in transportation extended beyond bridges, however. After studying British locomotives and recognizing both their promise and their shortcomings, he set out to refine the core technology. In 1827, Seguin patented the multi-tubular boiler, which routed hot gases through a bundle of small tubes rather than the single large flue common in earlier designs. This vastly increased heat transfer and steam production, multiplying locomotive power several times over. France’s first modern railway line, from Saint-Étienne to Lyon, was powered by Seguin’s engines. His design influenced countless other developers, including the creators of the famed Stephenson’s Rocket.

Seguin’s legacy is one of dreaming boldly and refining relentlessly: testing, failing, improving, and bridging what once seemed impossible. His ideas did not arrive fully formed—they were forged through persistent experimentation, proving that the most enduring progress often begins with a single, stubbornly pursued vision.

SMOKY PINK

Switchman’s Smoky Pink captures the reddish-brown tones of rust—or, perhaps more enticingly, the light to medium depths of coffee with cream. For any inventor, both are things of beauty. It is our hope that you will use this ink to record and refine your most outlandish and innovative ideas, bringing them that much closer to reality. May each stroke remind you that great things rarely arrive ready-made—they are dreamed, shaped, and perfected through persistence. Don’t fear the haze of uncertainty; let it be the forge where your best visions come alive.
