ARROWS ON RAILS
Of all the celebrated passenger trains of America’s streamliner era, few embodied speed and modern elegance quite like the Hiawathas of the Milwaukee Road. Introduced in 1935 amid fierce competition from rival railroads’ new Zephyrs and 400s, the first Twin Cities Hiawatha linked Chicago and the Twin Cities with a bold combination of high-speed steam power and lightweight streamlined cars. Named for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem, these trains were marketed as swift and stylish, capable of outrunning even the poetic arrow itself.
The early Hiawathas were powered by purpose-built Class A 4-4-2 Atlantics and later the powerful F7 Hudson locomotives. These machines regularly sustained speeds over 100 mph in daily service, paired with innovative cars that included distinctive Beaver Tail observation lounges. Success led to rapid expansion: Morning and Afternoon editions on the Chicago–Twin Cities corridor, plus additional routes such as the Midwest Hiawatha and North Woods Hiawatha. By the late 1940s, five services carried the proud name.
The pinnacle came in 1947 with the inauguration of the Olympian Hiawatha, the Milwaukee Road’s luxurious transcontinental flagship running from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest. This streamliner featured striking diesel power, signature Skytop solarium cars, and later full-length Super Dome observation cars that offered sweeping views of the Rockies and Cascades.
The Olympian Hiawatha made its final run in 1961, with the remaining Hiawatha services discontinued through the late 1960s and into 1971. Though the Milwaukee Road itself eventually faded, these trains remain enduring symbols of American railroad innovation, speed, and the golden age of passenger rail travel.
